The United States presidential alternative of 1912 was contested between quartette candidates; Incumbent republican William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson a democrat, former professorship Theodore Roosevelt running play for the new Progressive troupe, and Eugene V. Debs who was running for President under the collective troupe for the fourth time. Roosevelt, a former Republican, declined to run for re preference in 1908, following the long-established tradition that Presidents were to leave office later on twain terms. He instead hand-picked William Howard Taft to succeed him and Taft eventually won the election of 1908. During Tafts presidency, a rift grew between the two because Taft pul identify absent from Roosevelts idea of state-administered capitalism. The nomination for nonappointive Party was extremely competitive. After a long tie-up Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan threw his apply behind Woodrow Wilson in gear up to whacking Missouri Representative Champ Clark. Woodrow Wilson, former President of Princeton University and regulator of New Jersey, won the Democratic nomination after support for Clark faded.
